Marion Military Institute letter concerning quarantine in Louisiana and Mississippi [manuscript], 1905 Sep 2.

Letter to "Dear Sir," detailing the Marion Military Institute's lodging of students from districts under strict quarantine to avoid the yellow fever epidemic in Louisiana and Mississippi. MMI released this appeal for college students in those states to come study at the Institute in Alabama. On reverse side is a very short essay by Archbald Cary Coolidge discussing the University of Virginia, an institution whose graduates learn character in addition to academic information.

Archibald Cary Coolidge (1866-1928) was an American educator. He was a Professor of History at Harvard College and the first Director of the Harvard University Library from 1910 until his death. Coolidge was also a scholar in international affairs. Elizabeth Bateman Partington was the wife of Frederick Eugene Partington (Brown '79) and was Coolidge's grandmother.
